Energy giant SSE yesterday announced it will raise gas and electricity costs by up to 9.7% from next month.
But the huge increase, which is three times the rate of inflation, will force households to ration their heating, warned consumer groups.
There are also fears that the UK’s other major energy firms – British Gas, EDF, Scottish Power, E.ON and npower – will follow suit.
SSE’s increase sparked a political row between Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband.
