Natural gas from “fracking” has a role to play in helping the country cut carbon emissions and meet its energy needs in the next few years, a reports suggests today.But a long-term “dash for gas” that left the country “locked in” to dependence on the fossil fuel could jeopardise UK Government ambitions to slash carbon emissions up to 80% by 2050, says the Grantham Institute.Coastal Oil and Gas Ltd – a company applying to test drill in South Wales – say there is enough natural or shale gas lying under the region to supply the whole of Britain for the next 16 years.The firm was given permission to test drill for gas at Llandow Industrial Estate in the Vale of Glamorgan following a public inquiry last year.The Bridgend-based outfit is a 50% partner of Eden Energy in 10 exploration licences across South Wales from Cowbridge to Pontypridd, Neath, Port Talbot and Swansea.The Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment said in the short run emissions can be reduced by replacing coal-fired power stations with those fuelled by natural gas.
