Irish wind farms could power three million UK homes

POWER from 700 wind turbines in the Irish countryside could be transmitted under the sea to Wales to provide energy for three million homes.

Element Power wants to connect the Republic of Ireland with the National Grid at Pentir near Bangor and Pembroke in south west Wales – using two giant undersea cables.

The firm says surplus power from Ireland – generated in the Bog of Allen – could provide 10% of the UK target for renewable energy.

It could ease pressure for controversial on-shore turbines in Wales although anti-turbine campaigners on Anglesey said they did not want impose “inefficient” windmills on other communities.
