Direct power link from Guernsey to UK could be an option

Guernsey Electricity managing director Alan Bates said yesterday that further links would not only provide cheaper energy, but also the necessary infrastructure for renewable options.

‘Guernsey Electricity believes that the best strategy for the island’s energy security is to invest in undersea inter-connector cables,’ said Mr Bates, pictured.

‘Creating further links to Jersey and France, and even potentially to the UK, will benefit the island both in terms of accessing less expensive, lower carbon sources of energy in the short term, but also in providing necessary infrastructure for when renewables become a viable option for the island.’

Mr Bates, however, said they had to create the right balance between security and affordability.
